When Can You Start Exercising After Having a Baby? A Trainer's Guide to Returning to Strength Training

Updated: 2 days ago

After having a baby, you may be wondering "When can I start working out again?" This answer depends on recovery, delivery type, and how your body feels.

Generally, with vaginal birth you can begin gental movement after medical clearance (around 6 weeks). With a C-section, recovery may take longer before you can return to structured exercise.

If we think about recovery in different phases, I would recommend a return to movement like this:

Phase 1: Early Recovery (weeks 0-6) Focus on breathing exercizes, walking, and posture awareness. Recommended exercises include diaphragmatic breathing, pelvic tilts and short walks.

Phase 2: Rebuilding Foundations. Focus on reconnecting with core muscles and rebuilding pelvic floor strength. Recommended exercises include glute bridges, bird dogs and bodyweight squats.

Phase 3: Strength Progression. Once foundations feel strong focus on regaining full body strength. Recommended exercises include dumbbell squats, step-ups, rows and resistance training circuits.

Rebuilding strength postpartum is gradual, and may not be as linear as expected. You may need to slow down if you feel pelvic pressure, are leaking during exercise, or are in persistant pain.

You are capable. Becoming stronger than ever post-baby is totally possible!
