Walking: The Underrated Pregnancy Workout

Prenatal yoga, ligh strength training, and bouncing on an exercise ball are not the only ways to exercise during pregnancy. There is an incredible effective exercise that is often overlooked: walking.

It doesn't seem very flashy, but don't underestimate what a daily walk can do for your body (and sanity).

Walking is low impact, requires very little equipment (I'd recommend shoes), and can be adjusted based on how you are feeling that day.

Benifits include supporting cardiovascular health, helping maintain endurance in preperation for labor and delivery, encouraging healthy circulation, maybe reducing swelling in legs and feet, and improving mood/reducing stress.

Some days you may feel energized enough for a brisk 30-minute walk, other days you'll make it to the mailbox. Both count. Aim for consitency over perfection.

Try taking a short walk after dinner, a morning stroll before work, or (one of my favorites) an indoor peruse through your store of choice.

Your pace should allow you to carry on a conversation without feeling winded, and your posture should not be compensated. As your center of gravity shifts forward focus on standing tall, relaxing your shoulders, keeping your gaze forward and letting your arms swing naturally. Resist the urge to lean backward! Your back and hips will thank you.

Make it enjoyable, call a friend, listen to an audiobook, make it a family ordeal (OR DON'T).

Movement doesn't have to be complicated to be valuable. Every step is an investment in your health, and your baby's. One foot in front of the other, friends!
